College football playoffs? Not a good idea

Just the BCS with four teams instead of two

This whole scenario in which four teams will play off for the NCAA Div. I football championship is not much better than the previous idea. Since four teams are involved, many people seem to be excited about it. To me, it sounds just like the BCS with some glitter on it.

If the final field is like the one that was released this week,
can you imagine the uproar that would have ensued if the field included just one SEC team?

The four teams in the college playoff selection committee are listed below. The interesting part of this is that only Mississippi State is from the SEC. Yes, the SEC would be outraged with this group.

The field is balanced with one SEC team, one from the PAC-12, one from the ACC, and one from the Big 12. Alabama is not included in this group, but Mississippi State has to travel to Alabama to face the Tide this weekend. This may tell the tale of whether or not they are overrated, as some, especially Crimson Tide fans, believe.

1. Mississippi State (9-0)
2. Oregon (9-1)
3. Florida State (9-0)
4. TCU (8-1)

Even worse than their listing, this committee has some very weak links. Here are the members of the committee with my evaluation of each:

  • (VG) Tom Osborne, former Nebraska coach
  • (VG) Barry Alvarez, athletic director, Wisconsin
  • (VG) Archie Manning, Hall of Fame QB
  • (VG) Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, former superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy
  • (VG) Pat Haden, athletic director, Southern California
  • (OK) Tom Jernstedt, former NCAA executive vice president
  • (VG) Oliver Luck, athletic director, West Virginia
  • (VG) Dan Radakovich, athletic director, Clemson
  • (OK) Steve Wieberg, former college football reporter, USA Today
  • (WTF) Tyrone Willingham, former head coach of Notre Dame, Stanford and Washington (Did he ever win anything?
  • (WTF) Mike Tranghese, former commissioner of the Big East Conference (he oversaw the failure of a major conference).
  • (WTF) Condoleezza Rice (about those mushroom clouds, WMD -- still looking?)(Can't they do better with their token female?)
Scale:
VG Very good, top level
G Good, not top level, but close
OK Okay, don't know much about them
WTF What in god's name were they thinking?

Do you agree? Just leave me a comment.
