Repost: Should Pennsylvania Democrats be happy -- or despondent

-- that Jay Paterno is running for Lt. Gov.? Jay Paterno certainly made waves in Pa. political circles on Feb. 20 when he announced that he was going to run for Lt. Gov. on the Democratic ticket. Paterno joined a group of relative unknowns who have announced for the second position in Pa., including Mark Critz, former Congressman for the 12th Congressional District in Pa.  Is Paterno's move a positive event for Democrats?  Hardly.  In fact, it could be the worst thing that could happen to them.  Why? The Democrats want an up-and-down vote on Tom Corbett, the current governor who in Jan. was so disliked that just 23 percent of Pa. voters in a Franklin and Marshall poll believe that he deserved re-election <http://www.fandm.edu/fandmpoll>.  Apparently some people think that JayPa's entry into the Lt. Gov. race is a godsend for Democrat...

Stephen Colbert tries to recruit Jimmy Carter to Catholicism

… and Carter says yes (with provisos)  Comedian and self-professed Roman Catholic Stephen Colbert sat down with Jimmy Carter to talk about the former president's new book. Colbert said that he was going to conduct a tough interview -- but instead it became hilarious. As I watched this interview, I recalled how I, as a young man, felt about Carter in 1980. In short, I campaigned against him in the 1980 primary. Philosophically, Jimmy Carter and I were diametrically opposed to one another. I did ultimately vote for him then because his opponent was anathema to everything that I stood for at that time -- and now. However, Jimmy Carter has been the greatest ex-president in history. He has been a strong supporter of Habitat for Humanity and has worked in many humanitarian causes throughout the world.  Colbert's interview was interesting since he immediatel...

Paterno lawsuit may uncover more than honey

... the 1998 case could lead to perjury allegations The lawsuit that the Paterno family has filed against Penn State could open some key files for their defense team, but it could also open other files for the other side. In fact, that investigation may prove that Joe Paterno knew about the details  of the 1998 investigation of Sandusky that was conducted by the PSU police department. If so, Paterno would then be guilty of perjury for his testimony to the Sandusky grand jury.  That could filed under what is usually called "unintended consequences."  This 1998 case was the one that Ray Gricar refused to prosecute -- to the anger of the PSU police -- for some reason, one that we may never know about because of his disappearance. So, the Paternos may prove that the Freeh Report was done too quickly and accepted too readily by the board of trus...

Great news for Democrats:

... The wingnuts are still in charge Rand Paul Wins 2014 CPAC Presidential Straw Poll As long as the right continues to love those people like Paul, Santorum, Cruz, Carson, et. al., they will never again occupy the Oval Office.  They tried to use some moderates with a relative amount of moderate cache to pull off wins in '08 and '12, but the wingnuts are still the ones who steal the show.  I am hardly a Hillary fan, and would like to see the Democrats run more people in the primaries, but it may not matter. You will not see a President Paul or a President Cruz or a President Santorum in the future … more likely a President Christie if can stay away from an indictment. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/rand-paul-wins-2014-cpac-straw-poll

Leading the worst governor in Pa. history

Tom Wolf is running away from the field in the Democratic primary and is leading Gov. Clueless Corbett by 19 points. Wolf has produced some great political ads that he funded himself. Nothing is wrong with that, and that will probably continue for the next two months. This is early, but it may continue and give him a shot at taking on "the worst governor of Pa. in the past century." http://www.quinnipiac.edu/institutes-and-centers/polling-institute/pennsylvania/release-detail?ReleaseID=2012
