Are Philadelphia fans the worst? Bob Prince thought so

… also Chris Christie

Former Pirates' broadcaster Bob Prince was well-known for this quote, though I may take a few liberties with it: Philadelphia is the only city in the United State where they boo the national anthem.

That has been repeated by many since his time.

The Gunner had a few battles with the fans at Connic Mack Stadium. The story was that the opposing broadcasters were very close to the fans, so you could hear them harassing Prince on many occasions.

I can remember hearing those fans going after The Gunner.

In fact, The Gunner used to down a few beers over a doubleheader in 90-degree temps in Connie Mack. That was when he would make those statements.

Are they overly critical?

However, the Philly fans do have a reputation of being very critical -- about their own team and players, along with the other team's. They were very critical of Donovan McNabb, the Eagles' QB who took them to a Super Bowl, for not winning it. That is actually normal.

They go beyond the usual norms, however. They are just tough as nails.

Chris Christie

One of the favorite targets of the Philly fans' wrath is New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. They call him fat … and that is one of the kinder things that they say about him.

Well, Christie retaliated this week, saying this about the fans of the Philadelphia Phillies.

"The Phillies suck. Let's just start with that. They're from Philadelphia. They're an awful team. They're an angry, bitter fanbase, and it's not safe for civilized people to go to Citizens Bank Park if you want to root for the other team. Ya gotta believe what? Ya gotta believe we're awful people. That's what ya gotta believe."

Remember one thing: Christie is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, not either New York team.

Overall

My overall analysis is that the Philly fans are much more critical than those of the Steelers, Pirates, or Pens, who are critical enough. They become entirely too rabid and go overboard.

Nevertheless, they love their Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers. Just try to say something against them in their presence.

The fans themselves are allowed to criticize their teams, but no one else is allowed to do so.
