The crazy AFC-North — and AFC-West — are playing with the prognosticators’ brains


Lamar upset the Chiefs' applecart -- in a crazy start to the NFL season


… upsetting those experts!


Looking at the CBS NFL experts’ picks for the Super Bowl reveal one problem: After two weeks, the teams most picked, the Chiefs and the Bills, are 1-1. 


And looking at the NFC North that was supposed to be dominated by the Browns and Ravens reveals that no team is 2-0 … and in the AFC West, who would have thought that the Raiders and Broncos would be leading at 2-0?


It is a crazy start to the NFL season.

First, the Chiefs that everyone loves are 1-1, and they could very easily be 0-2 if the Browns had not collapsed in week one. 


And the Bills who looked woeful in week 1 suddenly looked great — albeit against the Dolphins — yesterday. 


And in the NFC, which definitely is weak in many events, the Packers lost to the Bengals in week 1.


Actually, I like this. The experts are no better than the rest of us. This could be an interesting season for a change — and it could be good for fans. 


Now, if only Florida had run a decent 2-point play and then defeated Alabama, the college game would become more interesting, too. 


We shall see.

Brian Flores … hiring Flores probably rankled Goodell To place this into context, understand that the only reason that the Steelers hired Mike Tomlin 15 years ago is because he was black.  Why? He had never even been a coordinator anywhere, never in the NFL. The only reason that he was interviewed was because of the “Rooney Rule.” That rule is one named after the late Dan Rooney who led the effort to force every NFL team to interview at least one black coach when it had head coaching openings.  The Steelers had focused their coaching search after Bill Cowher left on Ron Rivera, then a defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. Remembering the toughest loss I ever experienced in approximately a quarter-century of coaching football. George Pasierb was a great coaching adversary.

On a beautiful sunny, warm afternoon on Saturday, October 30, 1982, in Nanty Glory, Pa., the battle featured a clash of two undefeated titans of the Appalachian Conference.  One was the preseason unanimous favorite to win the title, the other a veritable surprise that season, one that had built an 8-0 record entering that game.  This battle lived up to the pre-game hype, ending in a one-point decision that was not certain until the final play of the game.  I thought of this because the coach of the powerful Shade-Central City High School Panthers, George Pasierb, passed away earlier this week. RIP Henry Aaron, baseball slugger who became the greatest home run hitter in history and endured racial taunts, death threats, and kidnapping schemes to accomplish that — and did so with dignity, honor, and humility
